What Do You Have That's Worth Fighting For?

6. Because you can
During one of his routines on Season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance the brilliant contemporary dancer Jakob Karr was being ribbed by Judge Adam Shankman on his jumping. Since Jakob has such extraordinary jumping and leaping skills, the choreographers were finding new ways to incorporate those skills in every routine, even if they didn't quite fit. When it came time for Judge Mary Murphy to weigh in on Jakob's performance, she quickly agreed with Adam but went on to tell Jakob that he was given this jump and that jump and any other jump and split and leap in the book to do, for one simple reason. That, Mary said, was because he can. Jakob can dance and jump and leap and soar and he does it more beautifully than almost everyone who does what he does. When he dances he makes it look effortless, but you know he fights for every ounce of perfection his mind and body will allow. His dancing is worth the fight and the fight shows up in his work. There is something you, too, can do like Jakob. You can do it because you can. Figure out exactly what that is and focus your fight on doing it better and better. It will be worth it.
My mom may or may not make it. That story is yet to be written. No matter what happens from here forward, this special lady is an example of what it looks like to fight the good fight. She is showing me, the family, the doctors, the nurses, and now, even you, what is truly important in the overall scheme. She is demonstrating that we pick the fights worth fighting. She symbolizes love and reverence for life at its very best. Of course, we all want to win at whatever we do. There will always be that thrill of victory and that agony of defeat. Nonetheless, it's never about winning or losing. It's always about how we play the game...the game of life.
