By now we are familiar with Nigel Lythgoe, the British television director and producer, who created such smash hits as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. Nigel has an eye for talent and sees thousands of individuals each season who are looking to realize a dream. He holds the Willie Wonka golden ticket in his hot little hand that can literally change the destiny of the lucky recipient.
From his years of experience in a tough, competitive, and sometimes cut throat business, he is known for stating there are no quick or easy roads to success and stardom. Nigel comes from the "hard work pays off in the end" school of thought. He makes no bones about his distaste for those who are spoiled, caught up in their own inflated ego, or believe they are entitled to become a star by doing nothing more than showing up. When he witnesses a singer or dancer who gives their all and then gives some more, he whole heartedly throws his support and respect in their direction. The rewards that go along with this philosophy are evidenced by the majority of contestants who have successfully navigated their way through the landmines of his competitions. Appearing on a show of this nature gives a contestant a faster track to the front of the line, along with massive exposure they otherwise might never get; still, they have to have the drive and the goods to succeed.
Although in reality, life is not a Fox reality show, the same principles apply for anybody attempting to foster their dream. The same qualities exist similarly in those individuals who achieve success. On the face of it, these might appear to be simple principles. We've heard them eloquently espoused in one way or other by spiritual gurus, self-help philosophers, and political and business leaders alike. Individuals have written best-sellers and built entire careers on the subject: Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, and Anthony Robbins immediately come to mind. The principles are proven and apply equally and to everyone across the board. Yet, as good as this information is it needed to be more relatable and stripped down to its basic parts. Principles that are relevant to success could be simplified by a common theme—words that begin with the letter P—and, therefore, might strike a more doable chord. Having knowledge of these basic letter P principles in your arsenal leaves you better equipped to actually apply them.
Pz's Pointers on identifying the "P" principles for success
1. Find the Passion
Nothing worth doing is worth doing unless you can't see yourself not doing it. (Try saying that three times!) Life goes by fast...in the blink of an eye fast. Why spend your brief stay on the earth doing something that doesn't give you pleasure? Why work a profession that isn't providing you joy or some genuine sense of fulfillment? Why invest anymore of yourself in an empty effort? Stop right now and go over in your mind what it is that you do. Is it something that you're doing because it's convenient or it pays the bills? Is it something where you're stuck or feel some form of obligation so you remain dug in and stagnant? Whatever it is, if you don't feel that inner feeling of pure passion about it, then it's time to make a change. As long as you're still here you can change.
Passion comes from a fire deep within. You may have to make some major changes in order to shine that light on the world. Changes take energy and may take time. Changes aren't easy and often require sacrifice and commitment. Imagine going through your entire life never realizing that feeling of passion. It's like having your face pressed up against the glass and all you can do is look. The prize is there on the other side just beyond reach. What a shame for you. What a shame for us. What a waste of a life. Identify what it is that makes you feel passionate. Break through and go beyond the barrier. Let the passion take hold. Let your light shine. Begin today to structure your future in such a way that someday you will match what you do with what you feel. That way you get closer to discovering who you are. If you can't go gung ho, full throttle into the passion, take small passionate steps in the right direction. This isn't all or nothing. You may have to phase the stale out as you usher the fresh in. Don't waste another day.
