Making the Best of the Rest of Your Life
Original Publication Date:
May 2009

He was only 16 years old. With rich and famous parents, he had the best life had to offer. When he fell in the bathtub and hit his head, they didn't think it would be the end—that his life would be over. Not yet. Not so soon. He had the rest of his life before him.
She was just 45 years old. With celebrated parents, a successful marriage and career, she had the best life had to offer. When she fell on the beginner's ski trail and hit her head, they never thought it would be the end—that her life would be over. It just wasn't possible. Not yet, anyway. She had the rest of her life to go.
He was barely 22 years old. With a career so bright and promising, he had the best life had to offer. When he completed his major league debut and was hit mere hours later by a drunk driver, they never thought it was possible—that his life would be over. Not now, not when everything was going so great. After all, he had the rest of his life ahead, didn't he?
For Jett Travolta, Natasha Richardson, and Nick Adenhart life ended suddenly, abruptly, and heartbreakingly too soon—much too soon. In each case, no one could have seen it coming. One minute they were here, the next they weren't. Life has an unusual way of unfolding unlike we expect. In the case of Jett Travolta, we can only wonder how his life might have evolved. Even though he had been diagnosed with a rare disorder, Kawasaki Syndrome, and suffered a history of seizures, we will never know what contributions the world missed out on because he's now gone. We can't begin to imagine the pain and sorrow his dad, John, and mom, Kelly, and sister, Ella, are left to endure. With Natasha Richardson, we can only ponder what roles we will miss seeing her play in the movies and on Broadway. We can only sympathize with the fact that her two sons will miss out on having their mom, and husband, actor Liam Neeson, his wife, and acclaimed actress Vanessa Redgrave, her daughter. And for Nick Adenhart, the rising, Los Angeles pitcher, we only got a tiny glimpse of that wicked curve ball and his strikeout potential. We'll never know if he could have won that Cy Young award or taken his team to the World Series. For these three human beings, we could conclude that although they might have had a good run of it thus far that their best days were surely in front of them. Destiny stepped in, though, and thought otherwise.
This could easily be you or me. We could easily be that individual who is here one instant and no longer the next. No one in this earth realm knows how long any of us are designated to remain in this life. We, human beings, are not born with an obvious expiration date. We live one situation, one circumstance, one breath, one heartbeat to the next. We could be around a few days, a few months, or many, many years.
So how do we make the most of whatever time we have been given? How do we make things that seem impossible possible while we still can? How do we begin today to rise as high as we're meant to rise? What's the hold up? What's the problem? What's the fear? What are we waiting for? It's time to get busy. The time to get busy on the rest of your life is now—right now.
