Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.

2. Doing the right thing is the only thing

It's been said that too many people think the only thing right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught. Character is doing the right thing when nobody is there to see you do it. When you toss that trash out the window on an empty highway does it make it okay that no one is around? If you find a wallet in a locker at the gym filled with cash does it matter that no one saw you find it? When faced with the option of right and wrong doing the right thing wins—period. Not always the easiest course of action and sometimes it comes at a cost to us, but it's the only possible option to take.

3. Shutting out the noise and the clutter

We each have a little voice inside to guide us. If we can shut out the noise and clutter in our lives, and listen to that voice, it will give us the answers we are looking for. The voice is our higher self and points us in the appointed direction. It requires effort to focus and zero in on that voice. The more you practice the better you get. Give it a chance to work on your behalf. It won't let you down. It won't steer you wrong.

4. Flip-flop when the flops worth flipping

Why is it that we're not allowed to change our minds? Suppose you were raised in a home with parents who were members of the KKK and were instilled with intolerance towards any race or culture outside your own. As an adult you marry a lovely person who shows you there is another way to live and think without bigotry and prejudice. You decide to adopt that philosophy and replace it with the other. You take a new path and turn over a new leaf. You decide to change your mind and flip-flop on the issue of racism. You have grown into a more evolved individual. In this instance, flip-flopping can be a good thing. (When you know better, you do better.) In this election year, become more discerning about what it means to change your mind. Some people change their mind because they are nothing more than lost sails going in whatever direction the wind blows. For others, it may be that the circumstance calls for a change. It may mean the situation is such that it requires you take a different stand. What you once thought or once said applied then but it doesn't apply now. You flip at the expense of criticism because the flip is the right and best move. Does the flip-flop diminish your word or lesson your character? Whether it's you or the circumstances, you are allowed to change your mind for the right reasons while maintaining your integrity. Know the difference.
