4. Negative criticism divides and destroys
If we don't believe in us and in our greatness, how can we expect others to treat us like we do? We can take on the issues of the day with civility and passion. We can agree to disagree with conviction and respect. When we jump on the bad-mouth bandwagon we do nothing to solve the serious problems that exist or raise us up beyond the sea of assault. When we treat America like a colossal failure, rather than a successful work in progress, then we, as its citizens, will surely find a way to live up to those expectations.
5. Giving gives hope
Former President Bill Clinton has just launched his new book called "Giving." Giving is an inspiring look at how each of us can change the world. It reveals the extraordinary and innovative efforts now being made by companies and organizations—and by individuals—to solve problems and save lives both "down the street and around the world." It urges us to seek out what each of us, "regardless of income, available time, age, and skills," can do to help, to give people a chance to live out their dreams. Being of service to others is the best prescription to address the problems of all nations. Each of us has something to give. Each of us can create a more hopeful future by giving something of ourselves today. You don't have to be Oprah or Gates to give. Giving involves more than money. Look within to see what gifts you possess. Discover the areas of your life where you have been blessed and start there. Giving is the easiest way to hitch your wagon to a star that pays off huge dividends. Giving enables you to feel connected to a vision far bigger and wider and deeper and higher than you alone could ever imagine.
6. Don't give up on the possibilities
Life works in perplexing ways. It can throw a whole lot of terrible, horrible havoc at you and expect you to handle it. Some of us do a better job of handling the mayhem than others. In the end, when the dust clears we are left with making the best of our own circumstance. As grim as it can get we have to hold on with all our might. Reach out if you need help. Giving up is not an option. Giving up is not on the list. There is still much left to do and the world needs all the help it can get. Lend a helping hand to another when you can. Yes, hope does spring eternal. The possibilities for life being what you wish it to be are endless. There is always hope somewhere is the mix. It's right there within our sight, within our grasp. When we believe, it'll float back up and show itself. It hasn't disappeared. It's been there all along—right there for the taking.
