Where's the Epicness in Your Life?
Original Publication Date:
November 2009
5. The President gets a chance for epicness, too.
When it was announced by the Oslo committee that President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize the first reaction by those present, from the right, the left, in the middle, and on other planets (lol) was unanimous. Huh? Whut? Whoa? You can't be serious? The President has been handed a phenomenal opening to actually live up to the original intent of the prize he's just been bestowed. Having not done anything of any real significance during his time in office, the committee chose him based upon the potential of what he can do and, hopefully, will do in the name of hope and peace for the future. Look at all the folks the President touches in his role as our highest elected official. Some are impacted directly, others indirectly, but all of America has a stake in him and he in us. For quite some time now these United States haven't felt very united or particularly hopeful. We're at war. We need to be at peace. That isn't a complicated concept. We need a better strategy of dealing with the bad guys. We're America. We should be able to figure this out. The rest of the world has slowly changed its view of us as the super power nation of hopes and dreams. The nation has gradually changed its view of itself going from the land of milk and honey to the land of bailouts and clunkers. Now, President Obama can step up and make his presidency the epicness it was destined to be. He can live up to the campaign promises and get us out of the damn war—both of them—and touch lives on so many levels encouragingly while moving America forward towards greatness.
Epicness equals greatness and this is his chance to make his mark.
After all, he's just one more person like you and me, who happens to be President. His journey has brought him to this place in history. The whole nature of the peace prize award, particularly this time, requires recognizing those of various nationalities and cultures who are trying to keep this planet from self-destruction. So this I say, 'Go earn that prize Mr. President. Show the American people what leadership looks like and a grand example of what epicness can be.'
6. Now, more than ever.
I'm going to ask you to take a glance back over your life and see where you've been. Ask yourself if you've planted enough seeds, left enough impressions, extended enough helping hands to have made some epicness. Perhaps you have, perhaps you haven't. Today gives you the chance to change whatever needs changing. I know it's hard to be positive and upbeat and optimistic when the bank is ready to take your home away. I know it's hard to be kind and caring and giving when you're beaten down by circumstances that you didn't see coming or weren't expecting. I know it's hard to feel like you can create anything resembling epicness when the view from the cheap seats is so grim. The only thing I can say to you is, epicness is as epicness does. Not to sound like Forrest Gump, but unless you have a mindset that you are here to have an epic experience, that chance will elude you. Now, more than ever, you need to see yourself and your life as one worthy to be here. As long as you remain in that place of positive expectation, you will face each challenge as it arises, conquer it, and reach your deserving place at the grand table of life. You'll have no problem finding the epicness. You'll be living it.
I'm thrilled to have been a part of Natural Muscle almost from the beginning. I'm grateful for the platform it has given me to bring my Perspective column to so many loyal readers for so many wonderful years. I'm appreciative of the responses I get when someone says my work has had an impact on them. (I heard that just today from Marc in Arizona!) I may not be able to call each of you by name, but, I promise, you are all a part of the epicness in my life. Look back at the cover when you are finished here. Look at what it represents. Think of the road these eight people took to end up where they are. Think of the road the magazine took to end up where it is. Now think of you and where you are. There is more epicness to be made. There is a whole future ahead and a whole world of people to touch and possibilities to be had right here right now. What are you waiting for? Get going...
Happy 14th anniversary Natural Muscle and wishing you many more years of epicness!
